In the past thirty years, the world of modelling has vastly changed. This has led to many, including aspiring models, being exposed to confusing misconceptions about the modelling industry.
At first step modelling, we receive dozens of questions from young would-be models every day
A career in modelling
While the details vary, ultimately the answer to these questions is: No.
Of course, every model has his or her restrictions. Sportswear models are generally required to have athletic body shapes. The skills needed for catwalk modelling don’t always correlate to those needed for photoshoots. Many models both begin and end their careers earlier than, for example, a teacher might.
However, it is impossible to define the modelling industry with such generalisations. Truthfully, the traits needed to become a model don’t end with appearance or age, but with personality, like with any job. Here at First Step Modelling, we believe that possessing and developing the following qualities will give a model the best mindset for a career in modelling:.
Good models understand their minds and bodies better than anyone else. They know their look, their needs, their aspirations, and their strengths. This includes maintaining your health, fitness and diet, as well as choosing the roles best-suited for you. After all it is perhaps even more important that a good model knows their limitations.
While a model must know their limitations, they must also not allow themselves to be defined by them. Overwhelmingly, drive, passion and persistence will break down the barriers an individual faces. Success does not happen overnight – sometimes it takes years to become the model you’ve always dreamed of being – but a good model will never let that discourage them..
Ultimately, modelling is a job like any other. A good model will also be a good worker and a good businessman/woman. Punctuality, pleasantness and presentation are essential skills for building connections, receiving jobs and auditions, and making a good impression. Similarly, good judgement is essential to avoid scams and to choose the right jobs for you.
Like any career in entertainment, modelling requires you to adapt to a variety of different environments on short notice. This could range from a wardrobe malfunction moments before a catwalk event to a midnight photo-shoot in an unlikely location. It is essential for a good model to learn to handle just about anything with ease or confidence.
